One of the oldest museums in the country, founded in 1868.
The Jósa András Museum in Nyíregyháza has the largest and most important collection of archaeological artefacts to date. This is thanks to the interest of the founder of the museum, András Jósa. From the very beginning, his aim was to preserve the monuments hidden in the county's land in a worthy place. It is almost symbolic that the first items in the museum's collection are archaeological artefacts, the Roman finds from a grave in Geszteréd, dug in November 1868.
LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION
A local history collection, which collects objects from the former Szabolcs County, later Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. Among its sub-collections, the World War I badge collection, the village seal prints of Szabolcs County, the county flags and the militaria collection, which displays the history of the military of Nyíregyháza, play an important role.
HISTORICAL DOCUMENT LIBRARY
The history of the Historical Document Collection, with more than sixteen thousand items, dates back to 1967, when the museum's historians at the time thought it worthwhile to take inventory of paper objects relating to the history of our city and county. In theory, the collection can be divided into several types of objects, although the inventory book does not distinguish their significance. An important group is that of documents similar to archival material, i.e. documents relating to the history of Nyíregyháza and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. For example, a copy of one of the 1753 settlement pacts of the city of Nyíregyháza issued by Ferenc Károlyi (dated 16 May 1753) is kept in the Historical Document Collection of the museum. There are also numerous documents relating to the guild industry of the town from 1818 onwards, when local craftsmen were allowed to set up their own guilds in Nyíregyháza. Historical documents can be found in the collection up to the present day.
NUMISMATIC COLLECTION
The numismatic collection of the Jósa András Museum consists of more than 50,000 coins. The collection was founded by the museum's founder, András Jósa András. The real boom, however, occurred under the directorship of Lajos Kiss and from the 1960s onwards.
Lajos Kiss devoted a great deal of attention to the enrichment of the medal material, and it was at this time that a significant part of the ancient collection was added to the collection, both by private donation. The material includes coins from the 4th century BC, including Greek, Egyptian and Carthaginian coins. The Roman material was also assembled by donation, with a collection of mainly imperial bronzes (sestertius, dupondius, ases) and denarii.
Since the 1960s, the Jósa András Museum has also received several large finds that are very important traces of the county's monetary circulation in the 16th and 17th centuries. Several leelets from Nyíribroiny, the denarius leelets from Nyírpetel, and the Árpád-era coins from Ecsed each added thousands of coins to the numismatic collection.
Since the mid-1990s, new finds have been added to the museum. These include the nationally renowned gold medal from Újfehérto, the more than 4,000 pieces from Kisvarsány, and the Roman Republican denarius found near Rakamaz.
FINE ART COLLECTION
The fine art collection of the Jósa András Museum was founded by the former director of the institution, Lajos Kiss. The museum houses works by such renowned local artists as Endre Barzó, András Berecz, Balázs Diószegi, István Huszár, István Kádas, Dénes Ősz, Gyula Pál, Sándor Sebestyén, Ernő Schubert, Tamás Szikora, András Váci and many more.
As well as collecting contemporary art, the museum has always taken great care to expand its existing collections and to collect works of local importance that celebrate the art of earlier periods.
The Benczúr collection of about 46 pieces, which was donated to Nyíregyháza by the painter's widow (Kata Piroska Ürmössy Boldizsár Kata) in 1921, was registered in our museum in 1950 and has been continuously enriched ever since.
